Bird Sightings:

October – December 26:  –RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER: Around since October 2011, the woodpecker continues to be seen in the same location as previously reported, in High River.

Dec. 24:

–NORTHERN HAWK OWL: Just west of Turner Valley along Hwy.546. Seen previously on Dec. 19.

–NORTHERN SHRIKE: Glenmore Reservoir, south escarpment W.of yacht club. By Bill Wilson.

–EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE: Deer River Green, SE Calgary, by Dave Breckon.

–PEREGRINE FALCON: W. of Black Diamond.

–TUNDRA SWAN(1): Frank Lake. Previously reported from the High River CBC.

Dec. 25:     –VARIED THRUSH:(1), seen in yard of Bob Lefebvre in SE Calgary.

Dec.26:      –SNOWY OWL(3), east of Calgary, by Terry Korolyk.

Bird Sightings:

There were many observations of wading and shorebirds over the weekend by many observers. Below are some of the larger numbers observed. Weed Lake is located on Hwy 560 (extension of Glenmore Tr) just east of Langdon

SUNDAY, August 14:
— CANADA WARBLER (1) – North Glenmore Park by Rob Worona
–BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER (1) – Elkwater in the Cypress Hills (near first washrooms as you drive west along the lakeshore from the centre of town) – Jeremiah Kennedy. The Gnatcatcher was first reported on Aug 9.
–RED-NECKED PHALAROPE (1200) – Weed Lake by Terry Korolyk
–LESSER YELLOWLEGS (600) – Weed Lake by TK
–WHITE-FACED IBIS (1) – Langdon Corner Slough (junction of Hwys 1 & 9)- by several observers

SATURDAY, August 13
–The following birds were all netted by banders at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary (IBS):
–CANADA WARBLER (1 recapture)
–NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH (7)
–WILSON’S WARBLER (1)
–TENNESSEE WARBLER (2)
–YELLOW WARBLER (9)
–YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER (1)

FRIDAY, August 12
–SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER (fair numbers) – Weed Lake by Richard Clarke
–SANDERLING (6) – Weed Lake by RC. Richard also saw similar numbers of shorebirds seen by Terry Korolyk on previous day (Thursday Aug 11)

THURSDAY, August 11
–RED PHALAROPE (1 imm) – Weed Lake by TK
–RED-NECKED PHALAROPE & WILSON’S PHALAROPE (several hundred) – Weed Lake by TK
–LESSER YELLOWLEGS (several hundred) – Weed Lake by TK
–SANDERLING (6) – Weed Lake by TK
–BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER (13) – Weed Lake by TK

WEDNESDAY, August 10
–CANADA WARBLER (1) – IBS by banders

–EURASIAN WIGEON (2) – one at the S side of Glenmore Reservoir in SW Calgary seen by BW and one reported on the Bow River at Mallard Point in SE Fish Creek PP by Jim Davis.
–COMMON LOON – numerous reports of this species in Calgary and area the past 3 days.
–HORNED GREBE – reported by several observers as above.
–RED-NECKED GREBE – numerous reports of this species as above.
–EARED GREBE – reported by several observers as above.
–OSPREY – reported by several observers as above.
–SONG SPARROW – numerous reports of this species as above.

Saturday, April 23
–RED-BREASTED MERGANSER – 5 seen by Bill Wilson on the SW corner of Chestermere Lake and also reported at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary in SE Calgary by Penny Smith and Nature Calgary Field Trip.
–EURASIAN WIGEON (1) – reported in the Frank Lake area, about 8 km E of High River, by Matthew Sim.
–HARLEQUIN DUCK – seen at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary by PS and Nature Calgary Field Trip.
–AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN (18) – in flight over the Bow River near Carburn Park by Sean Phillips.
–THAYER’S GULL (1 first year) – seen at Shepard Landfill in SE Calgary by Terry Korolyk. To reach Shepard Landfill follow McIvor Blvd, located E of 52 St SE, to its end.
–AMERICAN PIPIT – a large flock in the Frank Lake area seen by MS and 2 reported by BW on Twp Rd 232 about 1 km W of Hwy 791 E of Shepard.
–BREWER’S BLACKBIRD (1) – seen in the Frank Lake area by MS.

Friday, April 22
–EURASIAN WIGEON (1) – reported on the Glenmore Reservoir in SW Calgary by BW.
–CINNAMON TEAL (1) – reported in the Calgary area on a trip from High River to Innisfail by Paula & Guy.
–HARLEQUIN DUCK (2 males) – seen at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary in SE Calgary by BW.
–LONG-BILLED CURLEW (2) – seen in the Calgary area on a trip from High River to Innisfail on RR 244 by P & G.
–THAYER’S GULL (1 adult) – at Shepard Landfill by TK.
–EASTERN PHOEBE (1) – heard 200 metres E of Bridge 2 in Shannon Terrace in W Fish Creek in SW Calgary by BW.
–LINCOLN’S SPARROW (1) – reported by Shirley Hartig in her yard just NE of High River.
